Thinking of adding a pergola — any regrets?

We’re considering building a pergola over our patio to make the space more usable in summer, especially for shade. But I’ve heard from some people that it’s not always worth the cost. Does anyone here have one? Would you say it was a good investment?

We installed a pergola last June and honestly, I wish we had done it sooner. We worked with oakshs.ca/pergolas/ to design a custom one that fits our small patio perfectly. They offered suggestions on where to position it for optimal shade and airflow. We also added a retractable canopy and string lights — it turned the patio into a full outdoor living room. Now it’s our go-to hangout space, especially during evenings. It also helped reduce heat coming into the house through the back windows. The structure itself is solid and built to last, and they even followed up a few weeks later to check if we were happy. Definitely no regrets — it added function and value.
